In 2015, the government-owned Ethiopian Sugar Corporation turned to Netafim in a bid to expand its local sugarcane production capacity. Building on our extensive global sugarcane experience, Netafim laid the foundations for the world’s biggest greenfield drip irrigated sugarcane venture. Covering an area of 7000 hectares, the Wolkaite sugarcane plantation is fed by a 65km pipeline that brings water from the source direct to the fields, and will benefit from the latest resource-efficient agriculture technology and innovation. The project’s financing was provided by a consortium of banks led by Bank Hapoalim and facilitated by Netafim.
